Sometimes the world can be too much for May. Too loud. Too busy. Too people-y. But then she spies Harriet, a gloriously big stuffed spider, and takes her home. Soon May and Harriet become inseparable. Snug in a Harriet hug, May can brave public places; when things are too loud, Harriet’s legs can act as earplugs. With Harriet by her side, May feels safe, and the world feels less scary.

This playful and empathetic look at sensory sensitivities celebrates the different ways people experience the world around them and provides a relatable hero for all children. Parents will appreciate the tender message that May’s differences are something to be loved and celebrated, not problems that need to be fixed.

This book is so special to me because I wrote it with my daughter who is a children’s librarian. The two of us always dreamed of writing together—and here’s our first try! Part of the Little Laugh & Learn® series, Hi, Worry. Bye, Worry! offers children ages 6-9 simple yet effective tools to cope with and work through worry, beginning with acknowledging worry and inviting it in—for a little while (and with a smile). The friendly illustrations by Steve Mark will make kids laugh as they learn a range of healthy, empowering worry-taming strategies. Kids can read the book on their own or with an adult, discovering tools that improve mental, physical, and emotional health. Best of all, this little self-help book can be shared with friends to support each other during tough times.

Freshly updated! New content reflects changes in the understanding of ASD, including clarification that Asperger’s syndrome is no longer a specific diagnosis and why. The book also features new stories of young people with autism and an added chapter, “Tech Talk.” Meant to be read with a parent, this survival guide addresses kids’ questions and provides strategies for communicating, staying safe and smart online, making friends, and succeeding in school. Body and brain basics highlight symptom management, exercise, diet, hygiene, relaxation, and sleep. Emphasis is placed on helping kids handle intense emotions and behaviors and get support from family and their team of helpers when needed. Includes stories from real kids, fact boxes, helpful checklists, and resources. A handbook kids can refer to again and again, as they grow and change.
